Dreamtime
(Saturday, 9), real treat: the sextet comprised of alto player Gary Curson, trombonist Nick Evans, trumpeter Jim Dvorak, pianist Keith Tippett, bassist Roberto Bellatalla and drummer Jim LeBaigue known as Dreamtime.
The term 'free jazz' doesn't adequately convey the power and richness of their sound; they play roilingly intense but subtle music, straddling structure and freedom, with what has been described (by me in the 1990s) as 'fierce joy'. Strongly recommended.
Those wanting a sample of their sound should seek out the 1998 Slam album Zen Fish; Curson and Tippett (plus bassist John Edwards and drummer Mark Sanders, a quartet known as the Number) meanwhile, are featured on a forthcoming Slam album, The Making of Quiet Things.
